America makes a big fuss over July 4th because that was when white male landowners declared independence from England. But Black Americans weren’t included as most were enslaved. Although Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it wasn’t honored in every state. Even the end of the Civil War didn’t truly free Blacks.
However, a Union army general issued General Order No. 3 in Texas on June 19, 1865. This was the first Juneteenth. The order proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas, but gradually the effects extended across the nation. Finally, the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution officially ended slavery countrywide on December 6, 1865.
As of 2021, Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the USA. It took a lot of lobbying over decades to get it recognized. In fact, in the first hundred years after the initial Juneteenth, African Americans mostly celebrated at church. Now all Americans can celebrate this holiday and hopefully learn more about Black culture and history. We have a long way to go toward equality so it’s important to celebrate every positive step along the way.
We hope you enjoy our collection of Juneteenth shirts. Wear them to celebrate freedom.

So, don’t let the system get you down. From time to time it works. Juneteenth is a great example, and we hope there will be many more.
